In 2021, Florida eliminated the state requirement for a painting contractor license. Then in July 2025, Brevard County ended its local license requirement for painting as well.
Today, there is no state or local license required to offer painting services in Brevard County. This means homeowners have more options — but it also makes it even more important to carefully vet the painters you hire.
The right crew will stand out through clear communication, solid references, attention to detail, and a strong track record of reliable work. When there's no license requirement, taking time to choose carefully protects your home and your investment.
What the Law Actually Says
The 2021 change came through House Bill 735, which classified painting as a specialty trade the state does not regulate. It also prohibited local governments from creating their own licensing rules for it. Senate Bill 1142, effective July 1, 2025, closed the remaining gaps.
As a result, painting is no longer a licensed trade at either the state or local level in Brevard County. This is clear statewide law, not a gray area.
What This Means for Homeowners
Licenses used to provide a basic level of screening. They required exams, insurance, and proof of financial responsibility. That filter no longer exists for painting.
This doesn't mean quality painters have disappeared — plenty of good ones are still out there. It simply means the responsibility for choosing wisely now rests more fully with you as the homeowner.
In Florida's challenging climate (high humidity, salt air, heavy rain, and intense sun), a poorly done paint job fails faster and costs more to fix later. That's why vetting matters more than ever.
What to Look for Instead
Since a painting license is no longer part of the picture, focus on these practical signs of a professional crew:
They can clearly explain their process
Ask: "Can you walk me through how you prepare surfaces before painting?" A good painter should describe pressure washing, mildew treatment, caulking, crack repair, and priming — and explain why these steps are especially important in coastal Florida.
They carry general liability insurance
Ask to see their certificate of insurance for larger jobs to protect your property in case something goes wrong.
They provide a written scope of work
Avoid vague agreements. You should receive a clear written outline of what is included.
They have verifiable local references
Check their Google Business profile or ask for recent references from Brevard County homeowners. Look for feedback that mentions communication, preparation, and follow-through.
